How it works
Water should only flow one way
A backwater valve keeps sewage from backing up into your home. A backflow assembly does the same job on your drinking-water line, keeping your water from flowing back into the public supply. Both are one-way gates, and backflow assemblies must be tested every year to prove they still close.

Backflow questions, answered
What is a backflow test?
A certified tester connects a calibrated differential-pressure gauge to the test cocks on your assembly and confirms that each check valve holds tight and, on reduced-pressure assemblies, that the relief valve opens when it should. A typical test takes 15–30 minutes per assembly, and water to the protected line is only off for part of that time.
How often does my backflow assembly need to be tested?
In Washington, testable backflow assemblies must be tested when they’re installed, after any repair or relocation, and at least once a year after that. Your water purveyor sets your exact due date and usually mails a reminder.
Who is allowed to test backflow assemblies in Washington?
Only a Backflow Assembly Tester (BAT) certified by the Washington State Department of Health. Your purveyor won’t accept a test report from anyone else.
What happens if I ignore my test notice?
Purveyors send reminders, but continued non-compliance can lead to your water service being shut off until the assembly passes a test. It’s much cheaper and easier to book the test.
Do you send the results to my water district?
Yes, every time. We submit the test report to your purveyor and send you a copy for your records.
What if my assembly fails?
We’ll show you what failed and why, and give you a clear quote. Many failures are caused by debris or worn rubber parts that can be cleaned or rebuilt on the spot, then retested and filed as a pass.
